Can Smartish deliver the best user experience of 2020 complete with delight and a memorable unboxing for their $10 product? YES, let's see how they did it.
Watch how a well designed dieline combined with graphics that speak directly to the consumer create one of the best unboxing's of 2020 for a sub $10 product.
We've all seen memorable packaging for product costing hundreds of dollars, but how do you design packaging for product that's less than $10? You need to be Smart about it, at least you need to be Smartish. The box design for their phone cases tase into consideration the variety of products they carry and create an easy to customize box. A box that allows them to change the graphics on the exterior quickly and conveniently while still being a sustainable package design.
By creating an inner tray with an exposed tab on the box exterior the consumer is invited to open the box using the pull tab which not only opens the box, but it also removes the product in one motion. This interaction is unexpected but also memorable in that the visual design and copy writing are intended to entertain, while unapologetically peppering in call to actions at every step.
Ask and you shall receive appears to be the brand's guiding principle, which is something many brands are afraid to do.

You've seen plenty of beautiful
packaging out there for products at
retail 3 4 or $500 where they've created
custom materials all these different
print process is applied to the
packaging just a beautiful sharp crisp
corners on it but what do you do when
your product retails for 10 dollars
you've got a minimal budget on packaging how do you create smart intelligent packaging?
That's what we're gonna talk
about today I'm good on box
my name is Evelio Mattos, packaging
designer. And recently I purchased a new
phone I needed to get a new case so today
we're gonna talk about Smartish these
guys have phone cases variety of colors
for a variety of phones but beyond the
product itself what what struck me and
we got me super stoked on this was the
fact that this packaging is dirt cheap
this isn't the most innovative packaging
by any means but this packaging it
delivers a killer unboxing experience
it's everything you want in your Packaging.
so if you haven't pick up this
case if you haven't dealt with this
brand I suggest you go spend 10 bucks
pick this up and investigate the
packaging because this is how you do
packaging
so take a look at the pack from the outside you've got smartish in a light blue and dark blue and those are
the only two colors that are printed on
the outside of this box everything else
is a label this is one label that wraps
all the way around and comes up the back
of the barcode it keeps it really clean
really simple this is probably being
hand applied which is you know it takes a
little bit more time might cost a little
bit more on the fulfillment side but
from a packaging manufacturing
standpoint this is a killer solution for
anybody that's got products of under $10
gives you a lot of flexibility the
product changes all you're doing is
changing a label which is nothing the
copywriting on this is the copywriting
all this is a lot of fun
when you turn around instead of
having some kind of a cherry lock or
some kind of a tab to seal this they've
got this little tab here you got to open
sesame' which you pull and
you know I'm gonna show you that again
pull it raises this flap right so it
opens the box for you which is pretty cool
one other thing you'll notice is that
this box doesn't have dust flaps these
little minor flaps on the side the tuck
in it's a $10 product it's a phone case
if dust gets in there whatever you pull
the open sesame' tab lift it it opens a
box pulls us out gives you Wallet Slayer
volume one it's the first round take
this out nothing left here turn it
around products here comes with a
sticker then on the inside this little
tray it's really smart tray there's like
one little blue flap down here where
this folds over and glues it so the full
unboxing front back Open Sesame
raised this slide this out sticker
get this get that QR code in the product
they've even gone as far as to place the
credit card sized graphic in here just
slide this out Dino approved again just
some smartass comment on the back bar
code again
review this baby on Amazon one it's
telling me showing me how the product
fits in here how easy it slides out but
also it's got another call to action
don't be afraid to ask consumers to do
something for you again smartish
smartest packaging i've seen for
products less than $10
